Dan Pastorni’s ring had to have the Houston Oilers derrick on it. But there was a problem. It was just too big.

“We couldn’t figure a way to put it on the ring with the space we had allotted,’’ said Fred Cuellar of Diamond Cutters. “If we shrunk it down, we lost detail. Also, the crossing of the blue inside of the derrick, every colored stone we attempted to work with, didn’t work except for the rarest color, blue diamonds.

“We wanted something breathtaking.’’
