When artist Opie Otterstad said that in a meeting, it stuck with Fred Cuellar of Diamond Cutters International.
On Lewis, Cuellar said, “You’re talking about a person who, as far as I know and just about every expert out there, makes the top 10 list of the greatest athletes ever. Forget about just track and field.’’
Cuellar settled on a design where winged feet like those of the Roman god Mercury flew off the top of the ring frame in 3D and curved to the bottom. And, of course, they were done in Canary Yellow diamonds.
The ring, which has 188 investment-grade Canary Yellow and Vivid White diamonds, has the Olympic Rings on one side and the University of Houston on the other.
Lewis’ ring is size 11.
